Framework for Drama Education

Within the above concept drama education offers various methods such as group work as well as aesthetical means to reflect upon a personal relation towards the chosen “item” and the possible perspectives of media. Therefore the means of drama education can support the research phase (choosing of “items”), the phase of recording and it can/should be part of the presentation/s.

Throughout the recent decades drama education has undergone a fairly autonomous development compared to the professional theatre in its methodology, aesthetics and in the way it regards itself. So it has become very much of a discipline of its own. The methodology bases by and large on creative processes amongst a group of non-professional actors. The so created aesthetic product(ion) is supposed to correspond with the personalities of each group participant. The aim of this kind of drama education is, as far as we are concerned, to initiate, to accompany and to moderate the process in which the group presents on stage a mutually created piece of art. The analysis of taste, aesthetic signs and their correspondence with the intended contents, which take part within the creative process, are to a large extent personally motivated.

For this kind of work with non-professionals a wide range of methodology has been developed. These methods aim at enabling the group members to express moods, actions and reactions through their bodies. They help the group members to overcome their inhibitions, bodily and morally, towards other group members on stage. They also aim at a strong connection between feelings and thoughts and to be open for surprises of any kind as well as to work constructively with other group members – a basic condition for all kinds of collective work.

Within the current project we would like to examine the usability of this methodology in combination with media work. We would like to try it out within different projects with schools in both partner regions working along our project theme. From this work we expect an extended critical look on the topic, the development of methods especially for media work and last not least new impetus on the methodology and aesthetics of drama education.
